I see the Birkman instrument as a valuable tool in certain coaching situations. We work with MBTI since 2003 and Step II since the first accreditation class in Brazil in 2006. We introduced MBTI almost as a premise in our programs development, because before we speak of the leaders relationships with their employees, it is essential to speak of the relationship with yourself, and encourage this initial reflection with the use of the MBTI, either through the Step I or II, depending on the profile and maturity of the group involved. The acceptance was such that we ended up developing a specific program called "YOU" during which the participants spend one day focused on themselves and their relationships. The instrument helped very much, to justify the reasons of the differences, providing a better understanding of the daily basis relations, improving the performance of groups by leveraging process improvement in communication and "more professional" relationships, to understand that on the basis of the conflict there were typological and not personal issues. It is important to note that, in companies that the mapping is done in a corporate form, the preparation of a full notebook on the existing profile in the company, outlining the main strengths and pitfalls of the organization, ends up shaping a competitive advantage in managing people.

I have used the Birkman method in assessment projects followed by coaching for more senior clients. Also, I have used in career counseling programs and with interesting results. Customers respond very positively in feedback interviews. In general the results are convergent with people's perceptions about themselves and lead to good insights. In the case of assessment, the Birkman has proved very useful, especially to complement the interview skills. The part of relational aspects contributes a lot, because it shows the client in his usual behavior, but also its necessity and its behavior under stress. The tool is also very good to reflect on anyone's career. It is valid for the possibility of application in various products and projects, and for being easy and pleasant to answer. I use the Firo-B as an additional tool in the process of executive coaching I perform in Brazil and abroad, with great success. The instrument has been proved to be quite accurate and particularly useful to coachees facilitating the understanding of their options and behaviors in relationship with others. Unlike other Coaches who use tools as a complement to the diagnosis, I chose to use them during the process of coaching as a tool for comprehension and understanding of their choices and the impact they have, thus enhancing the outcome, as there is a greater maturity of the coachee in the process and an anxiety to find alternative ways and in their personal strategies. The receptivity on the part of coachees is quite large in relation to the Firo-B and I have obtained an interesting return in reviewing some options / preferences of behavior based on feedbacks. I consider it an excellent complement of the coaching process and even in other applications that involve the need for greater clarification on interpersonal relationships and their consequences. People want a little tangibility and concreteness in situations involving behaviors.
